MANILA, Philippines – A barangay councilman (kagawad) was shot dead in Quiapo, Manila on Wednesday.
Victim Amir Casan, 42, was sitting in front of the barangay hall along Globo de Oro Street when two men on board a motorcycle shot him.
Casan was rushed to the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Hospital but later succumbed to his wounds.
He sustained three gunshot wounds to the leg and face from a .45-caliber pistol.
Police have yet to determine the motive behind the killing.
Casan was known in the area for his anti-criminality campaign.
His remains have been brought to Quiapo Mosque to undergo Islamic burial rites.
Last June 29, a baranagay chairman was also shot dead in the same area.
Barangay 384 Zone 39 chairman Sainal Shariff, 56, was inside his house along Globo de Oro Street when one of two men on board a motorcycle shot him at around 8:40 p.m.
Shariff sustained two gunshot wounds to the head and chest, and was declared dead on arrival at the UST Hospital. – with a report from Zhander Cayabyab, dzMM
