MANILA, Philippines - Artists will parade a giant rotten egg along Commonwealth Avenue on the day of the State of the Nation Address (SONA).
Artists call the effigy “Penoy”, a play of President Benigno Aquino III’s moniker “PNoy.”
UGATLahi Artist Collective chairman Crisanto de Leon said in a press statement that the effigy reflects Aquino’s performance during his first year. “Papet, inutil at pahirap ang unang taon ni Aquino,” he added.
Artists from UGATLahi, Bagong Alyansang Makabayan and UP Diliman are already doing the giant egg’s finishing touches.
The 14-foot tall effigy is comprised of the egg with Aquino’s face on it. The egg is mounted atop a camouflage-painted jeep to represent the United States-made Hummer.
De Leon said the egg is also the grade militants will be giving to Aquino.
“Itlog ang grado sa kanya,” he said when asked how Aquino fared in terms of the economy, human rights and foreign policy.
As in previous effigies, “Penoy” will be burned down by the protesters during a mass demonstration.
De Leon said: “Ramdam na natin na hindi kayang panindigan ni Noynoy ang pagbabagong sinasabi niya, at bagkus ay lalo pang naghirap ang mamamayan sa ilalim ng kanyang pamumuno.”
