MANILA - Roland Maye was 25 years old when he started using illegal drugs.

He said he discovered it while working on his college term paper, which was about drug addiction. He said he interviewed drug addicts in his community until he became curious about drugs.

"Alam ko na lahat tungkol sa drugs. Uno yung report ko. Ang problema, sabi ko: 'Try ko kaya? Para malaman ko ang epekto.' Dun ako nagkamali," he said in an interview with ABS-CBN's Mutya ng Masa.

Maye said the turning point came when he used a bottle to beat up his older brother who caught him during a drug session.

The entire family then decided to put him in rehab.

Maye said being in rehab did him good because he discovered a passion for weightlifting.

One of the people in the rehab center was into lifting weights, and decided to take him under his wing.

For 9 months, Maye trained his body while weaning himself of his drug addiction inside the rehab center.

When he got out, he joined weightlifting competitions and immediately started winning.

Now, he is a member of the Philippine weightlifting team.

Maye said weightlifting gives him a different kind of rush.

"Ang saya kapag nasa victory platform at nasa number 1 ka. Parang yung moment na yun, ayaw ko na matapos," he said.

He said being placed into rehab was God's will for his life.

"If you look at rehab, the success rate is very low. It is really up to the person. Paglabas mo, wala ka nang bantay," he said.
