MANILA, Philippines – At least 40 homes situated near a railroad in 10th Avenue, Barangay 17 in Caloocan City were razed by a huge fire on Saturday.
Authorities said the fire started at around 11 a.m. and quickly spread across the neighborhood.
“Ang laki na po ng usok at nagkakataranta-taranta na po ‘yung mga tao,” said Shiela Banyasan, one of the residents.
The operation of Philippine National Railway was suspended for a few hours while firefighters were putting out the fire.
Firefighters said they had a difficult time extinguishing the fire due to the narrow alleys and parked vehicles.
“’Yung eskinita napakaliit tapos napakaraming naka-double parking,” said arson investigator FO3 Benedicto Tudla.
The fire was under control after two hours.
Initial investigation showed that a faulty fuse box in one of the houses triggered the fire.
“Sa second floor, may nadinig na pagputok,” said Tudla.
The affected families are temporarily staying in a nearby covered court. -- Report from Niko Baua, ABS-CBN News
