MANILA - Over 100 activists staged a protest in front of the National Library along T.M. Kalaw in Manila to mark Filipino-American Friendship Day.

Activists from the Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU), Anakbayan, Gabriela, and Bayan were supposed to march and stage their protest in front of the US Embassy.

However, they were stopped by the police in the middle of T.M. Kalaw.

The militants tried to break up the barricade of the police by forcing their way through, but police responded by pushing them and scaring them with their sticks.

In the process, Anakbayan leader Vencer Crisostomo injured his fingers.

The groups are calling for the junking of the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) and the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA).

They said these are lopsided agreements that only benefit the Americans.

Former Bayan Muna Rep. Teddy Casiño said these will only create greater instability in the region instead of achieving peace and security.

He said the entry of US troops and facilities in the country will also pose serious environmental hazards.

After an hour-long program, the militants dispersed peacefully.
