MANILA, Philippines – A search and rescue team has retrieved the body of a man who was killed after a wall collapsed on his home in Barangay Ugong, Valenzuela.

The body of the victim, identified as 33-year-old Rodel Pugoy, was found 11 hours after the wall gave way and buried at least three homes of informal settlers situated beside a bridge.

Pugoy’s two children were also wounded in the incident.

Pugoy’s wife Mary Grace Ejara, who was outside the house when the wall collapsed, said his husband sacrificed his life to protect their two children.

“Sinakripisyo niya ang buhay niya para mabuhay ang mga anak niya. Masakit po mawalan ng isang haligi sa buhay,” she said.

An 8-year-old boy was also killed in the mishap.

Meanwhile, barangay officials said the incessant rains triggered the collapse but noted that the wall had been chipped prior to the incident.

“Sumiksik ‘yung tubig sa maraming ugat tapos bumagsak ‘yung wall kasi may uka sa ilalim eh,” said Romer dela Cruz, one of the officials.
They said the residents had been warned against living in the danger zone but they refused to leave.

The local government said they will shoulder the funeral expenses for the two victims. -- Report from Jenny Reyes, ABS-CBN News
