MANILA, Philippines – A barangay chairman in Quiapo, Manila was shot dead on Thursday night.
Barangay 384 Zone 39 chairman Sainal Shariff, 56, was inside his house along Globo de Oro Street when one of two men on board a motorcycle shot him at around 8:40 p.m.
“Habang nanonood ng television sa loob ng bahay, may riding in tandem na huminto sa tapat ng bahay at pagkahinto, ang backride ay binaril si chairman,” said Superintendent Ricardo Layug, chief of Manila Police District Station 3.
Shariff sustained two gunshot wounds to the head and chest, and was declared dead on arrival at the University of Santo Tomas Hospital.
No one was able to see the faces of the assailants, who wore helmets. The suspects also used a silencer and attached a device on the gun that catches empty shells.
Shariff, a Muslim, immediately underwent Islamic burial rites. His remains will be brought to his hometown in Marawi City.
Police have yet to determine the motive behind the murder. They will also examine the footage of closed-circuit television (CCTV) installed near the crime scene. – reports from Francis Faulve, ABS-CBN News; Zandro Ochona and Dennis Datu, dzMM
