MANILA - A seven-year-old boy drowned in an estuary in Tondo, Manila at the height of the rains on Thursday afternoon.

The victim, identified as Jonard Pinochio, went for a swim at the Estero de Mapua along Antipolo Street corner Blumentritt at around 3 p.m. with his friend, Genesis.

This was around the time heavy rains started pounding Metro Manila and nearby provinces, triggering floods.

According to Genesis, Pinochio knows how to swim. However, he was swept by the strong current.

Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) personnel scoured the estuary until early morning on Friday to find the boy.

It was at 3:54 a.m. or nearly 12 hours later when a Coast Guard diver finally found Pinochio's body.

The PCG advised the public not to swim in estuaries especially during the rainy season. -- Report from Zandro Ochona, dzMM
