MANILA - The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) is investigating the death of a suspect in the robbery-rape of two passengers of a colorum van.
CHR Commissioner Gwen Pimentel-Gana, head of the task force on extrajudicial killings, said investigators are on the ground gathering information to determine if police protocols were followed or there was abuse of authority in the arrest of suspect Alfie Turado in Quezon City.
Turado was killed in the police vehicle allegedly after he tried to escape and grab a cop's gun.

Gana said they are working to speed up the probe, results of which could be out in a week or two.
"We cannot make a conclusion at this point in time. We have to look at all factors, the circumstances that surrounded the incident, and when we make a determination, all facts must be in place," she told ANC on Saturday.
"In the eyes of the [CHR], we have to find out if certain rights were violated in the arrest and whether or not indeed the standard protocol of the police was followed and no excessive force was used. Or in this particular case, should they have shot the victim?"
Reacting to claims the CHR is taking the side of suspects, Gana said they do not take the side of either victims or law enforcers, but only of the truth.
"Kung biktima ka, it is automatic that your human rights have been violated. But the law has provided your redress," said Gana.
"Sa mga duty bearers, ginagawa ba ninyo ang mga dapat niyong gawin para ipagtibay at protektahan ang karapatan ng ating mga mamamayan? Yun po ang aming trabaho. Kaya naman po tinitingnan namin kung tama sila. Ang mga biktima, sila po ay may prosesong paano nila makakamtan ang hustisya," she added.
Turado was the alleged accomplice of colorum van driver Wilfredo Lorenzo in molesting and raping two passengers.
Following his arrest, Turado admitted that he was with Lorenzo when the crime happened but insisted that he did not rape the passengers and just drove the van. - With ANC
