MANILA, Philippines - A Manila-bound Kenyan woman reportedly swallowed a stash of illegal drugs while she was on board a Qatar Airways Boeing 777 plane, authorities said Monday.

The woman, identified through the airline's manifest as Mary Ann Yango Owino, was seen by the airline crew of flight QR 646 swallowing the suspected drugs while she was on board the passenger plane bound for Manila.

The airplane's pilot immediately informed their Manila office, which notified airport authorities and awaited for the aircraft's scheduled arrival Monday afternoon.

Thirty minutes before the plane's time of arrival, Qatar Airlines Manila duty officer Jericho Pereda informed airport authorities that the pilot of flight QR 646 decided to divert the plane to the Bangkok International Airport.

Manila airport authorities called off their operations when informed of the development.

The suspect was immediately arrested at the Bangkok Airport and was brought to a nearby hospital to extract the suspected drugs.

The flight was delayed in its arrival in Manila for almost 3 hours because of the diversion to Bangkok. - report from Raoul Esperas
