MANILA, Philippines – A Malaysian couple was arrested at the arrival area of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 2 on Saturday after “shabu” was found inside their luggage.
Airport Customs Police chief Col. Marlon Alameda identified the Malaysian couple as Chandra Nadarajan and Tamil Selvi Veleo.
They arrived in Manila via Philippine Airlines flight PR319 from Hong Kong.
In her report, Customs examiner Carol Buenconsejo said she noticed the unusual body language of the two suspects.
When asked about the purpose of their visit, they said they are on their honeymoon.
However, the suspects failed to identify each other based on their declared names on the Customs declaration form.
Buenconsejo said she inspected their luggage and discovered a sachet of shabu hidden underneath a concealed compartment.
She then notified Customs duty collector Atty. Rey Nicolas, who ordered a thorough inspection.
Col. Alameda said initial investigation showed that the substance discovered by Buenconsejo was high-grade shabu.
Police said further examination of the luggage resulted to the discovery of several packs of shabu neatly concealed in a secret compartment.
The drugs weighed approximately 4 kilos, authorities said.
Another 2 kilos from the suspects’ other luggage were also recovered by authorities.
The confiscated drugs have a street value of P48 million, authorities said.
The drugs will be turned over to the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency for proper disposal and filing of appropriate charges against the suspects. -- Report from Raoul Esperas
