MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATE) A man sustained injuries after being shot by his close friend at Biak na Bato Street in Barangay Little Baguio, San Juan City, on Saturday night.
The residents in the area were disturbed when the victim, identified as 47-year-old Cezar Japos, ran out of a house and asked for help.
He said he was repeatedly shot by his friend, 54-year-old Roberto Banez.
Japos was able to run for a few meters before being met by his neighbors, who helped rush him to the Cardinal Santos Medical Center. He bore gunshot wounds to his shoulder and side.
Banez did not immediately surrender to authorities.
San Juan police chief Sr. Supt. Joselito Daniel said the suspect was armed with an armalite rifle and locked himself up inside the house. They needed to use tear gas to draw Banez out and arrest him.
The authorities recovered bullets of caliber .45, .22, and .40 guns, as well as armalite bullets. They are still determining if the guns were licensed and the motive behind the shooting.
Banez was brought to St. Claire Hospital and was subsequently jailed at the San Juan police headquarters.
He now faces charges of frustrated murder or homicide, as well as a potential illegal possession of firearms case if found that the firearm he used was not licensed.
According to Benjamin Dela Fuente, a friend of both Banez and Japos, the latter is now in stable condition after undergoing surgery.
The motive behind the shooting is still unknown, but police are investigating the possibility that both suspect and victim were using illegal drugs at the time of the incident. -- Reports from Eric Dastas, DZMM Correspondent; and Dennis Datu, DZMM
