MANILA, Philippines – Authorities inspected computer shops and internet cafes in Manila on Tuesday to ensure that an ordinance preventing students from playing games during school hours is being observed.

One computer shop holds a sign saying that students are not allowed inside during school hours, but authorities still spotted 3 students inside.

The attendant of the computer shop said the students assured him they didn't have classes.

The Department of Education (DepEd) and Manila officials said computer shops which violate the order will face suspension or cancellation of their business permit.

They also reminded shopkeepers that they can check the back of student IDs, which hold their class schedules.

One student, “Adrian” (not his real name), said he failed two subjects last school year because of his addiction to the computer game “Defense Of The Ancients” (DOTA).

“Niyayaya ako ng mga kaklase ko na mag-cutting para mag-computer,” he said.

Adrian's case is one of the reasons why DepEd has implemented a rule banning elementary and high school students from entering computer shops during school hours. -- Report from Sol Aragones, ABS-CBN News
