MANILA (UPDATE) – A male street vagrant was killed after he was accidentally hit by a Metro Rail Transit (MRT) coach between the Taft Avenue and Magallanes stations early Sunday morning.

MRT general manager Al Vitangcol said the rail system was just beginning its morning operations at around 5 a.m. when the accident took place.

“Our first train today from North Avenue going to Taft Avenue accidentally hit a male ‘taong grasa’ between Magallanes and Taft stations at around 5 a.m. The victim was dead on the spot based on the injuries suffered,” Vitangcol said in a statement.

Vitangcol said the incident has temporarily halt train operations from Boni to Taft stations.

The MRT operations went back to normal as of 9:17 a.m.

Probers believe the victim was sleeping on the rails before the incident happened.

Vitangcol said they will also investigate how the victim was able to enter the rail line despite the MRT’s high fences.

“We will likewise be conducting an internal investigation as to who are responsible for this security breach and hold them liable. MRT3 in coordination with DOTC will pursue the installation of Intrusion Detection Systems to prevent the occurrence of similar situations in the future,” he said.
