MANILA, Philippines – Police are tracking down a man and a woman who stole school supplies from a store in Divisoria, Manila.
A closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera inside the store captured the woman browsing for school supplies with the man and their 5-year-old child.
The woman set aside four boxes of pencils while the man seemed to be fixing his son's loose shirt.
Minutes later, the man stashed the pencil boxes between him and his son and quickly escaped.
The man stole at least P2,000 worth of school supplies.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) said the crime will have a negative effect on the child involved as he will not be able to determine if what his parents did was right or wrong.
“May psychological effect ‘yan kasi nahuhulma palang ‘yung pag-iisip at values ng bata. Ipinagbabawal ang exploitation ng mga bata,” said Atty. Tricia Clare Oco, executive director of the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Council.
The suspects can be charged with theft and child abuse when arrested and may face up to 6 years of imprisonment.
The child will have to undergo rehabilitation under the DSWD.
With the opening of classes fast approaching, the police called on Divisoria vendors and consumers to be extra alert as more people flock to the bargain haven for school supplies. -- Report from Zyann Ambrosio, ABS-CBN News
