MANILA - A top official of the SM Development Corp. (SMDC) died after falling off the 16th floor of a condominium in Makati City Wednesday, police said.

Makati City Police Chief Sr. Supt. Manuel Lukban said 52-year-old Efren Lim Tan, vice president for sales and property, landed on the concrete canopy at the 7th floor of BSA Condotel in San Lorenzo Village.

According to the victim's driver, he dropped off Tan at the condominium at around 9 a.m. Wednesday.

He said Tan, who looked anxious that morning, told him that he would just get something from his unit, which is located at the 16th floor of the building.

But an hour had passed and Tan did not come back.

Lukban said it was around 10 a.m. when Tan fell off from the balcony of his condominium unit.

Lukban said investigation showed that the case was a suicide since there were no signs of foul play.

The SMDC, meanwhile, said it is deeply saddened by the death of Tan, adding that he is a big loss to the company. -- Report from Dexter Ganibe, dzMM
