MANILA -- The Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) will implement a skip-train scheme on LRT Line 1 and 2 when school opens this June.
The system will be similar to the express train scheme being implemented in the Metro Rail Transit (MRT), wherein trains only stop at designated stations to bring passengers faster to their destinations.
According to LRTA Deputy Administrator Emerson Benitez, they are expecting an increase in the number of passengers that will use the trains.
LRTA also expects the number of passengers in LRT-1 to increase by 20%, and LRT-2 passengers to increase by 40% once classes resume.
The skip-train scheme will be implemented all throughout school year 2014-2015 in LRT-1 from Baclaran to Roosevelt, and LRT-2 from Recto to Santolan.
Benitez added they will monitor the number of passengers during peak hours, as well as which station has more passengers.
This will help them know where they will send empty trains that will skip some of the stations.
Aside from this scheme, LRTA will also add more trips on both lines during rush hours to accommodate the influx of passengers. -- report from Jon Ibañez, DZMM
