MANILA -- One man died while 6 others were injured when a train rammed a passenger jeepney in Sampaloc, Manila on Monday afternoon, police said.
Reynaldo Macapagal, 56, a cigarette vendor, was declared dead at a hospital. He suffered head and leg injuries.
According to his son, Macapagal hitched a ride on the jeepney, and was on his way to Avenida when the incident occurred.
Six other passengers were rushed to the hospital for treatment.
The jeepney driver was identified as Ronald Valdez, 39.
Initial investigation showed that a railway crossing signal warned vehicles that a train was approaching, but the jeepney still crossed the road.
Authorities said they also received reports that the jeepney collided with a tricycle prior to the incident.
The driver, who was also injured, reeked of alcohol when he was brought to the hospital, police said.
He will face charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and multiple injuries. -- with reports from Ricky Velasco and Zhander Cayabyab, DZMM
