Firemen in Fort Bonifacio fire receive medals

MANILA -- The Philippine Army (PA) recognized the firemen who helped put out the fire that consumed the Explosives and Ordnance Division (EOD) building in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City last May 7.

Medals were awarded to the 28 firemen who risked their lives in the fire, especially as bombs exploded during the fire.

Lt. Gen. Hernando Iriberri, commanding general of the Army, personally awarded the military civic action medals to 17 fire volunteers. He also awarded a military merit medal to one personnel from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP).

Firemen from the fire stations of Taguig, Pasay, Makati, Pasig, Brotherhood Filipino Chinese Fire Volunteers, Old Parañaque Fire Brigade, and Southern Police District will also receive plaques of recognition.

The Army is also preparing the awards to be given to the soldiers who responded during the incident, including those who were wounded and killed.

A total of 32 people were wounded in the incident, while 9 others are still in the hospital.

Iriberri said that they are expecting the results of the investigation this week, adding that appropriate sanctions and punishments will be given to those who will be proven guilty of negligence. -- report from Dennis Datu, DZMM
