Manila City engineer arrested for extortion
MANILA -- A high-ranking official of the Office of the City Engineer in Manila was arrested Wednesday for allegedly using his position to extort money from a contractor.
Operatives from the Manila Police District (MPD) arrested Engr. Juan Capuchino Jr., chief of staff of the Office of the Building Official, in an entrapment operation.
According to the MPD legal office, architect Brian Lim, a contractor involved in the construction of a condominium building in Tondo, approached their office to file a complaint against Capuchino.
Lim said Capuchino prohibited his construction project from pushing through even though they have all the required documents.
Capuchino allegedly defended his move by claiming Lim's project would block the drainage system in the area, but that he would allow the construction to push through in exchange for P50,000.
In the entrapment operation, Capuchino was caught accepting the marked money.
He will be charged with robbery with extortion.
The Mayor's Office has yet to release a statement whether Capuchino will be removed from office. -- report from Zhander Cayabyab, DZMM
