MANILA, Philippines – A gang leader at the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa was shot dead on Wednesday, an official said.

NBP officer-in-charge Supt. Richard Schwarzkopf said Dionisio Amores, leader of “Sigue-Sigue Sputnik” gang, was shot dead inside Building 8 of NBP’s maximum security compound by a fellow gang member.

Amores was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.

A .22 Magnum pistol was recovered at the crime scene.

An investigation was launched to determine how the firearm got inside the maximum security compound.

Investigators, meanwhile, suspect personal grudge was behind the murder.

Wednesday’s shootout was the latest incident of gang violence inside the NBP.

Last February 15, an inmate was killed and three others were hurt in a riot involving members of “Sigue-Sigue Sputnik” and “Commando” gangs.

On February 27, a knife-wielding inmate was also mauled to death by fellow inmates after he ran amok. – with a report from Jerome Lantin, ABS-CBN News
