MANILA, Philippines – Authorities confiscated about 500 kilos of double dead meat or "botcha" from vendors in Divisoria on Thursday night.
Dr. Hector David Dimaculangan said the Manila Veterinary Inspection Board acted on a tip and seized 4 sacks of dead pork hidden under a cart in the market.
No one admitted ownership of the meat, which already had a pale color and foul odor.
Dimaculangan said many still continue to sell the double dead pork because of the light penalty. The penalty is a fine that ranges from P1,000 to P5,000 with imprisonment of up to 6 months.
The inspection board has launched an investigation to determine the origin of the dead meat. It also asked consumers to only buy fresh meat bearing the inspection certification stamp. – Report from Jacque Manabat, ABS-CBN News
