MANILA, Philippines – A law student was arrested by agents of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Technical Investigation Division on Friday for allegedly hacking into an online bar exam review site.
The suspect, identified as Ervin Jansalin, was arrested near his home in Sisa St., Sampaloc, Manila.
Authorities said Jansalin injured himself as he tried to evade arrest by jumping off the balcony of his home.
Jansalin was carrying with him his laptop when he attempted to escape.
Authorities said it could be an indication that the suspect is guilty of the allegations.
“If he is found guilty, he can be made to pay a minimum fine of P100,000 plus mandatory imprisonment of 6 months to 3 years,” said NBI Technical Investigation Division chief Palmer Mallari.
Jansalin allegedly hacked into the ChanRobles bar review site, which offers online courses for P10,000.
Authorities said Jansalin hacks into the system and sells its content for P1,500.
“Bawat lecturer namin mayroon silang mga 6 videos, ‘yung iba mga 20, so talagang kumikita siya,” said Ronald Diaz, chief technical officer of ChanRobles.
Jansalin will face charges for violating the E-Commerce Law, particularly copyright infringement with the use of internet. -- Report from Maan Macapagal, ABS-CBN News
