MANILA -- A Chinese businessman was arrested before dawn on Tuesday for avoiding a police checkpoint near the hotel where US President Barack Obama reportedly stayed for his 2-day state visit in the Philippines.

Don Lunsheng, whose Filipino name is Arvy Li, refused to stop at the police checkpoint in Vicente Sotto corner Dela Rama Streets across the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) at 1:45 a.m.

The 29-year-old suspect even hit the barricade set up by the police.

The checkpoint was near the Sofitel Hotel, where Obama reportedly stayed overnight.

The suspect's vehicle with plate number XLW 587 was slightly damaged in the incident.

The man, who appeared drunk at that time, was with a certain Sheena. He said he was just supposed to accompany Sheena home.

He said he was not aware that Obama was staying at a hotel near the area.

The suspect was charged with disobedience to authority and resisting arrest. -- Report from Francis Faulve, ABS-CBN News
