3 killed in Malate fire

MANILA -- At least 3 people were killed when fire razed a residential area on Jorge Bocobo Street in Malate, Manila on Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

Manila fire marshal Supt. Jaime Ramirez said the blaze started on the third floor of the home of a certain Corazon Layug at 3:09 p.m.

The fire reached the fifth alarm before it was declared out at 4:40 p.m.

The fatalities were identified as Edgardo Villar, 61, his wife Margarita, 62, and their son, Merwin, 42.

Edgardo and Merwin were declared dead at the Philippine General Hospital while Margarita died at the Ospital ng Maynila.

Doctors said the three died due to suffocation.

An 89-year-old woman, whose name was not identified, was also injured in the blaze.

Her feet were accidentally dragged when she was being pulled away from the fire while she was sitting on her wheelchair.

Authorities said around 30 families were left homeless by the fire. -- Report from Zhander Cayabyab, dzMM
