MANILA -- Manila Mayor Joseph "Erap" Estrada, in celebration of his birthday, announced that he will increase the monthly allowance of members of the Manila Police District (MPD).

The mayor made the announcement when he visited the MPD Headquarters Monday.

He added that the local government alloted P27.8 million for the additional monthly allowance, or P10,000 for each member of "Manila's Finest".

Each member will receive an additional monthly allowance worth P2,500 from January this year.

Estrada said the fund for the additional allowance came from the special activities fund under the non-office expenditures of Manila City Hall.

Last December, each member of the MPD received a P6,000 retroactive allowance since Estrada assumed position as city mayor.

The mayor explained that he decided to prioritize the policemen's welfare because they are instrumental in maintaining peace and order in the city.

He added that he will soon increase the allowance of employees of the local government. -- report from Noel Alamar, DZMM
