MANILA, Philippines – Some 20 families in an informal settlement in Sitio San Roque in Quezon City have vacated their homes in exchange for cash and houses outside Manila.

Superintendent Pedro Sanchez of Quezon City Police District (QCPD) Station 2 said the government is prioritizing the relocation of residents near EDSA to pave the way for a road widening.

At least 20 families were given P32,000 each and promised a 32-square meter house and lot in Montalban, Rizal.

Twelve families had also availed of the government offer last week.

Some residents, however, said they do not want to leave the area.

Last September 2010, residents and supporters from urban poor groups had a clash with government forces during a demolition, leaving several people injured and causing massive traffic along EDSA.

The contested lot is reportedly being eyed for the development of the Quezon City central business district. – with a report from Doland Castro, ABS-CBN News
