MANILA, Philippines - One of 2 bus robbers was shot dead Monday night after one of their intended victims turned out to be a policeman.

Driver Joselito Caday said the two unidentified suspects declared robbery shortly after they boarded the bus along EDSA Guadalupe in Makati at around 11 p.m.

One of the passengers, Police Officer 2 Herbert Baylon, declared he was a policeman, resulting in an exchange of fire.

Suspected robber Carlo Saturnino Barcelon died after Baylon used him as a shield as the other suspected robber was shooting him.

“Nagbanta yung suspect na babarilin ako… dinepensahan ko na yung sarili ko, tapos ‘yung isang suspect binaril din ako,” said Baylon, a member of the Marikina City Tactical Operations Center.

The other robber took off with some of the passengers’ valuables and about P18,000 in earnings from bus driver Joselito Caday.

Some of the passengers were able to retrieve their belongings.

The bus was carrying some 20 passengers when the robbery occurred.

Baylon, meanwhile, said it was his third time to encounter robbers inside a bus. – report from Francis Faulve, ABS-CBN News
