MANILA – A fire hit a residential area in Barangay Tonsuya, Malabon around midnight Monday, leaving hundreds of families homeless.

The Bureau of Fire Protection-Malabon said the fire erupted at a residential area along Palmario Pilapil Street at around 12 a.m. and reached Task Force Charlie.

The fire was declared out at 5 a.m.

The fire razed at least 200 homes and left at least 5 wounded.

Fire Officer 1 Modesto Despi, Malabon City arson investigator, said a certain Elizabeth Villegas went missing at the height of the fire.

Despi said residents feared that Villegas, a paralytic, drowned after falling into a deep portion of a swamp beside her house.

Despi said the fire allegedly started at the house of a certain Marissa Gicoso where a lit candle was believed to have been left unattended. – reports from Kori Quintos, ABS-CBN News
