'Torture cop' goes missing
MANILA, Philippines - A police official accused of torture has gone missing, authorities said Monday.
Police Senior Inspector Joselito Binayug, who was caught in a video physically abusing a suspect, is nowhere to be found, according to Commission on Human Rights chairperson Etta Rosales.
Rosales said Binayug's disappearance was confirmed by police Director General Nicanor Bartolome.
Binayug is facing administrative and criminal charges over his alleged abuse of a detainee, who is seen in the video being whipped and having his genitals tied and pulled by a rope.
The detainee died following the incident.
A Manila court issued a warrant of arrest for Binayug in November 2011 for the alleged torture and death of the inmate.
Justice Secretary Leila de Lima expressed suprised over the report that Binayug has gone missing.
She thought that the police official was in the custody of the Philippine National Police. - report from Henry Omaga Diaz, ABS-CBN News
