MANILA – Makati Vice Mayor Romulo Peña has agreed to relinquish his position as the city's acting mayor after receiving orders from the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).
Peña, who was sworn in as acting mayor after an Ombudsman suspension order was served on Makati Mayor Junjun Binay, earlier asked the DILG to clarify his status after the Court of Appeals released a writ of preliminary injunction against the suspension.
Peña had refused to step down as acting mayor after the CA released a temporary restraining order on the suspension. Citing the legal opinion of the Department of Justice and the Office of the Ombudsman, Peña said the TRO was already moot as the suspension order was already served.
The CA, however, eventually released an injunction order on the suspension.
The Office of the Ombudsman has brought the CA's move to the Supreme Court, saying only the high court can stop the Ombudsman from performing its duties.
Peña's move is seen to ease the tension at the Makati City Hall, where supporters of Binay have camped out after receiving news of the suspension order. - report from Dennis Datu, dzMM
