MANILA – Campaign posters featuring political arch rivals Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim and former Mayor Lito Atienza are spreading throughout the city, projecting a message that new political alliances have been formed between Lim and Atienza.
But Atienza was quick to deny he has knowledge about the posters, saying it’s black propaganda of his long-time political opponent.
He believes the posters were manufactured to confuse the voters.
"Pinalalabas nila na kami ay magkaalyado. Ang poster na ito ay hindi po totoo at hindi manggagaling sa amin," Atienza said, while holding the poster that shows him and Lim together in a picture.
Atienza says he and the Buhay party-list group are supporting only one candidate, former President Joseph Estrada, who is running against Lim in the 2013 mayoralty race.
"Lahat ng ginawa ko noon, sinira niya (Lim), how can I identify myself with somebody who damaged Manila? We want Erap to win," Atienza said.
He added that there is no shifting in alliances.
"Ang intensyon nito (posters) ay guluhin ang isipan ng mga botante na may bagong alliance, there is no shifting of alliances, it is part of the dirty campaign in a political season," he said.
No support for Isko
He also clarified that they are supporting Estrada, but not his running mate and incumbent Vice Mayor Isko Moreno.
Atienza said it is possible that in Manila, it will be Estrada, and Lim's vice mayoralty bet Lou Veloso, who might win in the election.
"Hiwa-hiwalay sila sa vice mayor eh, pero sa mayor si Erap lang," he said.
Lim, meanwhile, said he does not know where the posters came from or who funded it.
He said he too was shocked when his staff showed him the posters bearing his picture together with Atienza.
"Hindi ko alam kung saan nanggaling ‘yun, I did not authorize such, definitely hindi nanggaling sa amin ‘yun," Lim said.
