Man pushed off underpass beam, saved by mattress
MANILA - A man believed to be under the influence of illegal drugs attempted to jump off a beam at the EDSA-Quezon Avenue underpass on Wednesday, Araw ng Kagitingan.
The man, who was wearing a pair of shorts and seemingly not in his right mind, climbed the beam above the underpass and stayed there for hours.
The rescue team laid out an inflatable mattress or rescue air cushion on the underpass to try to catch the man before rescuers approached him.
When the man attempted to go to the other side of the beam, rescuers pushed him off so he would fall on the mattress. He was immediately brought to a hospital.
Some relatives identified the man as Fernan Salas, a jeepney and taxi barker in Quezon Avenue.
They said Salas has been addicted to illegal drugs ever since his wife left him. -- report from Zhander Cayabyab, DZMM
