As most malls in Metro Manila will be closed on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, more people are expected to flock to supermarkets and department stores by Wednesday night to do their last-minute shopping.
Given this, mall giant SM has decided to extend its store hours at supermarkets, Hypermarkets, and SaveMore outlets until 11 p.m. this Holy Wednesday.
"For Wednesday night we are anticipating a lot will be at the Hypermarket and Savemore because I think that's the preparation for Thursday and Friday. We are willing to extend until 10:30 p.m. to 11 p.m.," said Renee Bacani, mall manager of SM North EDSA.
Malls in Metro Manila have witnessed an increase in foot traffic since the start of the Holy Week. SM North Edsa for instance, has reported a 20-percent rise in foot traffic as compared to last year as some Filipinos prefer to stay in Manila for the Holy Week break.
SM malls across the country will be closed on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday except for SM Baguio where many tourists are expected to arrive, as well as the bayside restaurants in the Mall of Asia. Mall operations will be back to normal by Black Saturday.
Gokongwei-led Robinson's Malls will also be closed Thursday and Friday, except for their mall in Tagaytay (Robinson's Promenade Tagaytay). Likewise, Ayala-operated malls Glorietta, Greenbelt, and Trinoma will be following the same schedule.
Meanwhile, some restaurants at Bonifacio High Street in Taguig City will remain open this Holy Week. Stations of the cross have also been put up at the area to give people a chance to reflect, with an Easter concert on Sunday.
"After you party hard for the Holy Week, make sure you take some time to think about what it's really about," reminded Bebo Bharwani, organizer of Church Simplified. Report from Zen Hernandez, ABS-CBN News
