Alarm scares off robbery group, 1 nabbed
MANILA – Police arrested a taxi driver, believed to be part of a six-man group who attempted to rob a Villarica Pawnshop in Malanday, Valenzuela City on Wednesday, reports said.
Police identified the suspect as Nonito Canoy, who was arrested by the Valenzuela City Police.
Sr. Supt. Rhoderick Armamento of the Valenzuela PNP said Canoy acted as the driver of the group which also used his taxi as their getaway vehicle.
The morning of the incident, Canoy and two others served as lookouts when their cohorts barged inside the pawnshop to declare a holdup.
To their surprise, the establishment had an alarm system, and the suspects had to flee before they could rob the pawnshop. The pawnshop’s CCTV caught the plate number of the taxi, which led to the arrest of Canoy.
"May kasama sya, isang taga-Misamis, isang taga-Cagayan," Armamente said.
Police positioned themselves near establishments and pawnshops, in case the group struck again, but the suspects did not show up.
"Maghapon kaming nagbantay baka umatake sila ulit pero hindi naman," Armamento said.
"Mukhang may karanasan na ang grupo pero hindi nila napaghandaan ang presence of mind ng kahera kaya nung nagalarm nagpanic sila," he added.
Police said however that during the foiled robbery, the suspects managed to get the firearms of the security guards. This was what prompted them to surmise that the group may strike again in the area.
Police, meanwhile, are urging the public to be vigilant.
The CCTV footage of the Valenzuela city hall and the pawnshop will be turned over to the police on Thursday, to aid their investigation. -- With a report from Francis Faulve, ABS-CBN News
