MANILA -- A University of Santo Tomas (UST) nursing student who lost his allowance due to gambling tried to recover his losses by robbing a taxi driver in Cubao on Monday, police said.

Police said the 19-year-old student boarded the taxi driven by Ronaldo Quintero and declared a robbery along N. Domingo Street.

The suspect, who was armed with a bladed weapon, was able to get Quintero's earnings worth P5,300.

The taxi driver was able to immediately alert policemen after the incident.

The suspect was arrested in P. Tuazon corner N. Domingo.

Recovered from him were the victim's money and an 11-inch bladed weapon.

PO3 Spartacus Pareja said the suspect spent only a night at the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) Station 7 in Cubao after the victim decided not to file a case against him.

Pareja said the taxi driver took pity on the student, who said he only resorted to committing robbery after he lost his P3,000 allowance from an online casino.

The suspect's parents also pleaded to Quintero not to file a case against the student, police said. -- Reports from Eric Dastas and Johnson Manabat, dzMM
