MANILA -- The Philippine National Police (PNP) Anti-Cyber Crime Group has arrested 37 foreigners in a raid in Barangay Merville, Paranaque.

Senior Superintendent Gilbert Sosa said the suspects -- 35 Taiwanese and 2 Chinese mainlanders -- are involved in telecommunications fraud.

Using phones and the Internet, the suspects allegedly threaten people in China to extort money from them.

The suspects pretend that they are policemen, lawyers, and officials of financial institutions, and accuse their victims that they are violating money laundering laws.

Once the victims believe them, the suspects then allegedly ask for money to be deposited to a bank account.

The foreigners have been turned over to the Bureau of Immigration. - report from Edwin Sevidal, DZMM
