MANILA – Romulo Peña attended the command conference of the Makati City Police and Southern Police District on Thursday.
Peña, the city's vice mayor who assumed the post of acting mayor following the suspension of Makati Mayor Junjun Binay, joined Makati Police chief Sr. Supt. Ernesto Barlam, SPD deputy director Sr. Supt. Elmer Jamias, and the city's police station commanders to discuss the city's peace and order situation.
Peña insists he is the city's acting mayor since the Ombudsman's suspension order on Binay was already served and he was sworn in when the Court of Appeals released a halt order.
Binay's camp has filed contempt charges against Pena, Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales, Interior Secretary Mar Roxas, and Justice Secretary Leila de Lima for not recognizing the temporary restraining order.
Even though the holding of a command conference with Pena indicates support for the latter, Barlam and Jamias maintained that they were not siding with anyone and were just doing their job.
In a recent development, the Office of the Ombudsman urged the Supreme Court to stop the CA from implementing the TRO, arguing that it is an independent constitutional body which must be protected from the "unconstitutional interference of respondent Court of Appeals (Sixth Division)."
