MANILA -- At least 44 people were injured in a collision involving three passenger buses along Philcoa, Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City on Saturday morning.
The accident, which involved buses of Nova Auto Transport, Safeway and Marikina Autoline, occurred at around 6 a.m.
Most of the victims were passengers of the Nova bus.
Most of them sustained head injuries after slamming onto the steel chairs of the bus. They were brought to East Avenue Medical Center for treatment.
According to the drivers of the Safeway and Marikina Autoline buses, the Nova bus bound for Baclaran was speeding when the accident happened.
The Nova bus reportedly rammed into the Safeway bus bound for Welcome Rotonda while the latter was about to drop off passengers in Philcoa.
The Nova bus also sideswiped the Marikina Autoline bus bound for Ayala.
The driver of the Nova bus, identified as Mario Rogelio Jr., immediately fled the scene after the accident.
He later surrendered to authorities at around 9 a.m. He said he had eaten first due to nervousness before deciding to give himself up.
Rogelio denied that he was speeding. He also apologized to the passengers.
Rogelio, as well as the drivers of the Marikina Autoline and Safeway buses, were brought to the Quezon City Traffic Sector 5 for questioning.
According to SPO4 Henry Se, chief of investigation of the QC Traffic Sector 5, they will file charges of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple physical injuries and damage to properties against the three bus drivers. -- Report from Dennis Datu, dzMM
