MANILA -- Fire razed a residential area in Barangay 86, Caloocan City on Saturday afternoon, leaving one dead and around 200 families homeless, authorities said.
The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) said the blaze started at the second floor of the house of a certain Sylvia Paklian along Calaanan Street at 12:25 p.m. It reached Task Force Bravo at 1:05 p.m.
Caloocan City fire marshal Superintendent Roel Jeremy Diaz said the fire quickly spread in the area since the houses were made of light materials.
The cause of the blaze has yet to be identified.
The fatality was identified as Jason Dado.
According to Dado's uncle, Carlos, the victim was sleeping when the fire hit their house. The victim was reportedly drunk.
Dado's brother tried to wake him up but failed. The brother then had no choice but to leave Dado behind, Carlos said.
Dado's burnt body was later found inside his bedroom, authorities said.
Around 100 houses were gutted by the fire, which left about 200 families, mostly informal settlers, homeless.
The incident earlier caused traffic along EDSA-Monumento after affected residents occupied the southbound lane of the road.
The affected families will temporarily seek shelter in the barangay's covered court.
The cost of damage by the blaze was estimated at P3 million. -- Reports from Robert Mano, dzMM; Jasmin Romero, ABS-CBN News
