MANILA, Philippines - The Bureau of Fire Protection conducted Friday an earthquake and fire drill at the Department of the Interior and Local Government building in Kamuning, Quezon City.
As smoke broke out on the 5th floor, people started to evacuate the building. Within 5 minutes, Quezon City firefighters were already at the scene along with 2 rescue teams with their ambulance.
The firefighters had a problem in setting up the aerial ladder truck because the road was sloping. It took them more than 15 minutes to be able to operate the aerial ladder and rescue 3 individuals.
The firefighters also showed off their skills in rescue by rappelling down the building, some with people they had rescued.
According to Cheif Superintendent Santiago Laguna, drills like this one are very important. "It's Fire Prevention Month. We also have to prepare for possible earthquakes like what happened in Japan," he said.
Laguna admitted that although they lack equipment, they are ready or prepared to respond if ever there will be an earthquake.
