MANILA (UPDATED) – An inmate died and another wounded in two separate stabbing incidents inside the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) on Monday morning, an official said.

NBP Superintendent Fajardo Lansangan said George Almo, who had been convicted for murder, was stabbed dead by a still unknown suspect while he was on his way to the chapel inside the Maximum Security Compound at around 8:45 a.m.

Almo, 38, a member of the Sigue Sigue Sputnik Gang, was declared dead on arrival at the NBP Hospital.

About 30 minutes before Almo's stabbing, Fajardo said a member of Batang City Jail, identified as Nolfie Ladiao, was stabbed while he was playing basketball. The assailant was identified as Enrico de Asis, a Sputnik gang member convicted for homicide.

Ladiao, imprisoned for attempted rape and homicide, was brought to NBP Hospital for treatment.

Due to the incident, NBP officials have ordered a lockdown of all cells in order to prevent further violence.

Investigators have yet to determine the connection between the two stabbing incidents.

De Lima orders probe

Justice Secretary Leila De Lima has ordered an investigation into the stabbing incidents.

Although she has received an initial report from Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) Director Franklin Bucayu, De Lima said she will have an opportunity to hear what actually happened first-hand, since she will be at the NBP on Tuesday morning for the graduation ceremonies of new jail guards.

"That's perennial, yung gangs, yung ganyang incidents. Pinapaano ko pa what exactly triggered that... how come meron na naman knives o sharp objects? Although most of these, I understand, are improvized objects," she said.

"So that will be part of my inquiry tomorrow, bakit may ganoon pa rin," De Lima said. – reports from Dennis Datu, dzMM; Ina Reformina, ABS-CBN News
