MANILA -- Doctors, teachers and activists held a picket outside the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) office in Quezon City Friday morning to denounce its controversial advertisement which depicts doctors as tax evaders.

Dr. Beng Reyes, a member of the Health Alliance for Democracy (HEAD), called BIR Commissioner Kim Henares a "bully."

The controversial ad shows a doctor perched on the shoulders of a grade school teacher. The blurb went on to say: "When you don’t pay your taxes, you're a burden to those who do. Do your share."

Reyes said they are dismayed over the BIR's "shame campaign" against professionals, including doctors who she noted are public servants.

While she admitted that there are doctors who do not pay the correct taxes, Reyes said the BIR should not generalize those in the medical profession as delinquent in tax payments.

The group also urged the BIR to focus instead on going after businessmen who have bigger tax deficiencies.

Members of the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) also joined the protest.

The BIR, for its part, had said the advertisement does not single out doctors and is aimed at anyone who is not paying the correct taxes. -- Report from Robert Mano, dzMM
