MANILA -- Two still unidentified men who held up a passenger jeepney died after an encounter with police along Quezon Avenue early Tuesday, reports said.
Victims Laarni Villanueva and Rose Ann Aclan told police that when they boarded the jeep in Banawe, three men were already on board.
Within minutes, the three men pointed a gun at the victims and declared a hold-up.
"Umupo sila tapos pagsabi, ‘tara na’. Nangholdap na po sila," recounted Aclan.
"Sabi ng lalaki, papuputukan kita," Villanueva added.
The suspects also threatened to shoot the driver if he stopped for help.
"Sabi sa kin, diretso mo lang dahan-dahan,” driver Francisco Arliga told police.
According to Supt. Victor Pagulayan, station commander of QCPD Station 11, the suspects were alighting from the jeep when they were chanced upon by roving policemen.
"Pagbaba ng jeep, nagpaputok agad," Pagulayan said.
Noticing the presence of authorities, the suspects fired shots at the police, and an exchange of gunfire ensued, killing two of the suspects on the spot. Their cohort, however, was able to flee with the victims’ belongings.
According to Pagulayan, this was the 5th case of hold-up inside passenger jeepneys along Quezon Avenue from August last year.
