MANILA, Philippines – More than a hundred families were rendered homeless when a fire razed a residential area in Muntinlupa City late Saturday.

The fire started at 11:30 p.m. at the D. Laurel Compound in Barangay Putatan, according to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP).

The blaze reached third alarm before it was eventually put out by responding fire fighters at around 2 a.m. the next day.

"Sabi nila kandila raw nagsimula, kasi may jumper ‘yung walang mga ilaw,” said Baby, one of the residents.

"May nagsisigaw sunog daw may sunog hindi ako naniniwala lumagbas ako nakita ko malakas na yung apoy," added Virginia.

The homeless families had to spend the night at the covered court of Barangay Putatan.

Some of the residents, however, chose to look after their charred belongings to ward off looters.

The Muntinlupa Fire Department said the incident should serve as a reminder to residents.

"Ang fire prevention should be everyday. Hindi dapat sa March lang, para ma-prevent natin ‘yung mga sunog na to," said Fire Inspector Roderick Aguto.

Damages to property were estimated at P500,000. – From a report by Bettina Magsaysay, ABS-CBN News
