MANILA, Philippines - National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) deputy chief Reynaldo Esmeralda returned to work 2 days after surviving an attempt on his life.

Esmeralda believes the ambush is related to the Ohara kidnapping and extortion case, which led to the dismissal of Magtanggol Gatdula as NBI director.

Esmeralda, however, clarified that he is not accusing Gatdula of being the mastermind of the ambush against him.

On Thursday, Justice Secretary Leila de Lima said authorities are close to arresting suspects in the attack.

"Meron ngang significant lead, which could lead to the immediate apprehension of the suspected gunman," she said.

"This is something that we really need to do speedily. There should be a swift investigation of that ambush incident. Gusto rin malaman kasi ng Presidente agad kung ano nga yan, ano ang ambush na iyan, at kung sino ang pwedeng may pakana niyan," she added.

De Lima also clarified on Friday that she never tagged Magtanggol Gatdula as a suspect in the ambush.

She said there is no reason for her to answer Gatdula's demand for an apology.

"Why should I apologize, wala naman akong sinabi. Sinabi ko lang naman doon, may tunay na security threats ngayon. I never pointed any fingers at anybody," de Lima said. - with a report from Niko Baua, ABS-CBN News; ANC
