MANILA – A fire razed at least 17 houses in Barangay Rosario, Pasig City past noon Tuesday.

Chief Inspector Roy Quisto, Pasig City fire marshal, said the fire erupted at 12:05 p.m. at the house of a certain Jenny Española along Dr. Sixto Antonio Avenue.

Española said she smelled burning wires prior to the incident. When she went upstairs to check where the smell was coming from, the fire was already engulfing the second floor of her house.

She said she tried to put the fire out with water, but it only made matters worse.

No one was reported injured in the incident, but some 60 families were affected.

Afternoon classes in nearby Rosario Elementary School were also cancelled after thick smoke reached its classrooms.

The students were brought to the barangay hall and a nearby subdivision as firefighters accessed the burning compound through one of its buildings.

The fire was declared out at 1:35 p.m. The Bureau of Fire Protection said some P2 million worth of properties were damaged in the blaze. – report from Dennis Datu, dzMM
