MANILA (UPDATE) - A man who took his former girlfriend hostage was shot dead by police in Paranaque on Monday afternoon, authorities said.
Police tried to negotiate with the assailant, Godofredo Modesto, before he was shot dead.
The incident occurred in San Isidro Village around 3 pm.
The 40-year-old Modesto, who was armed with a knife, brought his victim Alicia Paybay to a room and started stabbing her while negotiations for her release were ongoing, police Inspector Bernando Mendoza said.
This forced police to shoot Modesto.
Paybay, who sustained several stab wounds in her thigh and leg, has been brought to a hospital.
She has been declared out of danger.
Witnesses told police that Paybay had been trying to leave Modesto, who was insisting that they stay together. - reports from Henry Atuelan, dzMM; Maan Macapagal, ABS-CBN News
