MANILA, Philippines - Residents rescued two girls taken hostage by an unidentified man in Barangay Merville, Parañaque City Friday morning.
The man, suspected to be at least 25 years of age, first grabbed a 10-year-old girl along a street in South Admiral Village and tried to drag her away. The victim was able to shout for help, prompting residents to run after the suspect.
The suspect used the girl as a human shield but eventually let her go. He then grabbed an 8-year-old girl and also used her as a shield.
One of the residents, identified as Jonas Raveno, said the suspect threw stones at them.
"Lumalaban na ho eh. Nagbatuhan na kami. Inabot ako ng bato niya, napadapa ako dun sa mga kabatuhan din," Raveno told dzMM.
"Eh nung malapit na siya sa akin eh 'di inanuhan ko rin ng bato tapos nung nadapa rin siya saka ko na siya nayakap. 'Di ko na pinakawalan. Nakagat na nga ako eh," he added.
The suspect was hit in the forehead, causing him to fall unconscious.
The second hostage victim, who also sustained scratches, was then rescued by the residents.
Village guards and personnel from the barangay hall also responded to the incident.
One of the guards, identified as Samser Calagiya, and the mother of one of the victims, Arlene Torres, were also hurt in the incident.
The residents said it was the first time they saw the man inside the village.
Authorities have yet to talk to the suspect since he is still being treated at the hospital. The suspect had no firearms and his motive for grabbing the girls remain unknown. -- Report from Dexter Ganibe, dzMM
