MANILA, Philippines – While earthquakes can’t be predicted, Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology Director Renato Solidum said it is highly probable that one will hit Metro Manila.
But instead of panicking, people have been advised to be prepared and vigilant on how to respond to such tragedy.
On Sunday, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) held an earthquake drill so that they will be ready once an earthquake strikes.
In the “Oplan Metro Yakal,” the MMDA action team were divided into 4 groups.
Each group were assigned to 4 different areas where they will respond once the Phivolcs and the MMDA Metrobase alert them.
The four respective response areas have golf courses – the Veterans golf course in the north, Villamor Airbase golf course in the south, Intramuros golf course in the west and the Wack-Wack golf course in the east.
Authorities will lead people into these open areas where they will be safe from collapsing buildings.
The MMDA is also coordinating with the Department of Social Welfare and Development and the various local government units to be more equipped in case an earthquake hits Metro Manila. – Report from Zyann Ambrosio, ABS-CBN News
